Cruise Beauty Routine: What to Pack, How to Protect Your Skin and How to Get Glam for Formal and Casino Nights at Sea

Cruise Beauty Routine: What to Pack, How to Protect Your Skin and How to Get Glam for Formal and Casino Nights at Sea

Short answer: a cruise beauty routine needs three things. First, a stripped-back skincare kit that copes with sun, sea wind and dry cabin air-con. Second, a long-wear evening look that survives a formal dinner, a show and a late night in the ship's casino or bar. Third, a few calm-tummy and sea-day comforts. Pack SPF 30 or higher and reapply it every two hours on deck. Take a barrier cream, a hydrating mist and a setting spray, and do your nails before you board.

I've done a handful of cruises now, from a winter mini-cruise across the Skagerrak to a week in the Med. Each time I've packed slightly less and enjoyed it slightly more. This is the routine I've landed on, plus what I wish someone had told me before my first formal night.

Two Weeks Before You Sail: The Prep List

Cruise days are long, and you won't want to spend them fixing your face. Most of the work happens at home:

  • Book a gel or BIAB manicure a few days before you leave. Salt water and pool chlorine are hard on regular polish.
  • Get brows and lashes done (tint, lamination or a lash lift) so you can skip half your eye makeup on sea days.
  • Do a trial run of your evening look and photograph it. Ship cabins have small mirrors and odd lighting, so you'll want a reference.
  • Decant everything. Travel bottles save space, and most ships provide basic shampoo and shower gel.
  • Check the dress code. Most big lines have at least one formal or gala night per week, and some have themed evenings, such as white parties or decades nights.

For more on slimming down your routine without losing the bits that matter, my post on maintaining your beauty routine while on holiday covers the essentials-versus-luxuries question in detail.

The Cruise Beauty Bag: What Earns Its Place

Ginger sweets or teaFor queasy moments on choppy daysKeep a few in your handbag

If you're still building the kit itself, I loved the edit in the John Lewis travel essentials beauty bag, which is packed with minis that are ideal for a cabin bathroom shelf.

One non-beauty item always goes in my bag: a pack of cards. Some of my favourite cruise memories come from quiet evenings in the cabin, not the big nights. Old Maid is the perfect game for mixed ages. In Norway it's called Svarteper ("Black Peter"), and the jack of spades is the card nobody wants to be left holding. It's a gentler way to end the day than the roulette wheel upstairs, though if you're curious about that wheel, there's a clear Norwegian guide to roulette odds and the house edge that does the maths in plain numbers. Svarteper is perfect for a rainy afternoon in the fjords.

Formal Night and Casino Night: Glam That Lasts

This is the bit everyone gets excited about. On a big ship, formal night usually means dinner, photos, a show, then cocktails and maybe a turn around the casino. That's five or six hours under strong lights, so the look needs to be built to last.

  1. Prep: hydrating serum, light moisturiser, then a gripping primer on the T-zone.
  2. Base: thin layers of long-wear foundation, concealer only where you need it, and a light dusting of powder.
  3. Eyes: a soft bronze or champagne smoky eye reads beautifully in photos and under casino lighting. Tightline with a waterproof liner.
  4. Lips: a classic red or a berry, lined and blotted, with a second layer after dinner.
  5. Lock it in: setting spray, then carry a mini powder, your lipstick and blotting papers in your clutch.

Classic Hollywood glamour is my go-to, and if you want a few more ideas, I put together five glamorous night makeup looks that work just as well at sea.

A few practical things are worth knowing about the casino itself. On most ships it only opens once you're out at sea and closes when you're in port. The minimum age is 18 on most lines, though some set it at 21 on certain sailings. Dress codes follow the evening, so on formal night you'll be in your gown anyway. If you're heading off on a Norwegian fjord cruise or one of the Scandinavian ferry cruises, there's a detailed Norwegian guide to when cruise ship casinos open and what you'll find inside. It covers opening hours by cruise line, the games on board and which Nordic ferries have a casino at all.

My only rule for casino night is the same as for duty-free: decide your spend before you go, carry it in cash or as a set amount on your cruise card, and enjoy it as part of the evening's entertainment. The Scandinavians are very good at this. If you read Norwegian or don't mind a translate button, this page on setting limits, budgets and breaks when you play lays out the deposit, loss and session limits you can use. It also lists the free helpline Norwegians can call.

Daytime on Deck: Sun, Wind and Salt

The biggest beauty mistake on a cruise is underestimating the sun. There's a breeze, so you don't feel hot, and the light bounces off the water from every angle. The NHS advice is clear on how often to top up:

"It's also recommended to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, as the sun can dry it off your skin." – NHS, Sunscreen and sun safety

Reapply straight after a swim too, even if your sunscreen says water-resistant. My daytime routine on deck is simple: SPF, a tinted lip balm, waterproof mascara if I'm in the mood, sunglasses and a hat. In the evening I cleanse properly to get rid of sunscreen, salt and sweat, then apply barrier cream. If your itinerary includes hot ports, my guide to looking after your skin while travelling to hot climates has more on heat and humidity.

Sea Days, Seasickness and Cosy Cabin Evenings

Sea days are made for slow mornings: a sheet mask, a long breakfast and a book on the deck. If the sea gets choppy, the NHS has some simple suggestions, including sitting in the middle of the boat, looking at the horizon and getting fresh air. My favourite is the easiest to pack:

"try ginger, which you can take as a tablet, biscuit or tea" – NHS, Motion sickness

On a queasy day, skip the heavy eye makeup (watery eyes and mascara don't mix) and stick to tinted moisturiser, cream blush and balm.

Then curl up in the cabin or the lounge with the deck of cards you packed. Sea days are when those cosy games come into their own.

Your Cruise Beauty Checklist

  • Manicure, brows and lashes done before you leave
  • SPF 30+ for face, body and lips, plus a stick for top-ups
  • Barrier cream and a hydrating mist for air-con and wind
  • Long-wear base, setting spray and a waterproof liner
  • One statement lipstick for formal night
  • Hair oil, silk scrunchie and a heat protectant
  • Ginger sweets or tea for choppy days
  • A pack of cards for cabin evenings
  • A casino-night budget decided before dinner

FAQ

What makeup should I take on a cruise?

Keep it compact: a long-wear base or skin tint, concealer, cream blush, one neutral eyeshadow palette, waterproof mascara and liner, a statement lipstick, and setting spray. Add a lip balm with SPF for daytime.

How often should I reapply sunscreen on a cruise?

The NHS recommends reapplying every two hours and straight after swimming or towel drying. On deck, the reflection from the water makes this even more important.

What do you wear to the casino on a cruise ship?

Follow the evening's dress code. On formal night that means your gown or cocktail dress. On other evenings, smart-casual is fine on most ships. Glam makeup with a long-wear base and setting spray will last from dinner to the casino.

When is the casino open on a cruise ship?

Usually only when the ship is at sea. It typically opens shortly after departure and closes before you dock, so hours change from day to day. Check the daily programme on board.

How do I stop my makeup melting in humid ports?

Use a mattifying primer on the T-zone, thin layers of long-wear foundation, a light powder and setting spray. Blotting papers do the rest without adding more product.

Pixi HandHero Hand Creams: Meet the Four Scents

Hand cream is one of those beauty essentials that I always have within easy reach, particularly as we head into the colder months. There’s nothing worse than dry, uncomfortable hands, so I’m always happy to discover a hand cream that combines effective hydration with a gorgeous scent.
Pixi HandHero Hand Creams: Meet the Four Scents
And the latest Pixi HandHero collection has certainly made hand care a little more fun.

I’ve been trying four versions from Pixi, all with the same cute, rounded packaging but with different coloured lids to distinguish the scents. Alongside the original HandHero, there are three newer fragrance options: PixiRose, PixiMimosa and PixiFig. Each has its own personality, so choosing a favourite really comes down to what type of fragrance you prefer.

Pixi HandHero - £12 here

The original Pixi HandHero is the simplest of the four, with its fresh, clean feel and green lid.

It has a lightweight, quick-absorbing formula designed to provide moisture without leaving hands feeling greasy. The formula combines antibacterial botanicals with moisture-locking Ceramide NP, while rosemary oil, tea tree oil and jojoba oil help to nourish and condition the hands.

I particularly like this one for keeping beside the sink or on my desk because it feels like a proper everyday hand cream rather than something you only reach for when your hands are particularly dry.

It's also a really handy size at 30ml, so it can easily be popped into a handbag or taken away when travelling.

PixiMimosa - £12 here

If you prefer something a little more floral and uplifting, PixiMimosa is the yellow-lidded version.

This one has a beautifully layered fragrance, combining juicy pear and fresh green leaves with ylang ylang, mimosa and violet petals, before finishing with warmer notes of hawthorn and amber.

It's fresh and feminine without being overly sweet, making this a lovely option for daytime.

I also love how the yellow lid works with the little floral illustration on the packaging — it's probably the one that immediately catches my eye when the four are sitting together.

PixiFig - £12 here

The green-lidded PixiFig is probably the one I'd pick when I want something a little fresher and more sophisticated.

The fragrance opens with sparkling bergamot, followed by earthy green fig leaves and iris, giving it a clean, green character.

It's quite different from the sweeter floral feel of PixiMimosa and the more obviously floral PixiRose. The fig notes give it a slightly more sophisticated feel, while the bergamot keeps it fresh.

I think this would be a particularly nice one to keep on your desk or use throughout the day when you want your hand cream to feel like part of your fragrance routine too.

PixiRose - £12 here

And then there's PixiRose, with its pretty pink lid and rose illustration.

As you'd expect, this is the most traditionally floral of the four, combining blooming rose, sweet lemon, delicate lily and jasmine. Pixi describes the fragrance as elegant and uplifting, and I can see this being a favourite for anyone who loves classic floral scents.

The addition of sweet lemon stops the fragrance from feeling too heavy, while lily and jasmine give it that soft floral finish.

For me, this is the one that feels the most traditionally feminine — and the pink packaging definitely adds to that!

Which Pixi HandHero Would You Choose?

I really like that Pixi has taken one hand-care formula and given it four different personalities.

  • Pixi HandHero is fresh and clean, making it a great everyday option, while
  • PixiMimosa is bright and floral with its juicy pear, mimosa and amber notes.
  • PixiFig is greener and more sophisticated thanks to bergamot and fig leaf,
  • PixiRose is the classic floral choice with rose, lemon, lily and jasmine.

The three new scented versions retain the same lightweight, hydrating HandHero formula and are designed to leave hands feeling soft, smooth and comfortable.

And I have to admit, I love them as a collection. The little coloured lids make them look almost like beauty accessories rather than something as practical as hand cream.

If I had to pick a favourite, I think I'd be torn between PixiFig and PixiRose — but which one would you choose?

If you are a fan of Pixi, their Advent Calendar is on sale right now and it is just £40
