Storm Glass - Does it really predict the weather?

As Brits, a lot of our talk is about the weather, it is just who we are. Conversations naturally flow with asking "What's the weather like where you are" and "Blimey it is cold" often keeping us entertained without even knowing about it. I am possibly more obsessed than most with the weather because I suffer with headaches which are called Barometric Headaches, they occur after a drop in barometric pressure. The headaches, which can turn into a migraine often come with additional symptoms, including: nausea and vomiting. increased sensitivity to light. So, I am always aware
Storm Glass - Does it really predict the weather?
I was sent a Storm Glass by Kikkerland, oddly something I had always looked at in stores such as Waterstones because they fascinate me, the first one I ever bought was broken in its box, so it never got used.  The Storm Glass is said to have helped Charles Darwin predict the weather and whilst the original inventor is unknown, but it was re-invented promoted by  Admiral Robert Fitzroy who was the Captain of Darwin's HMS Beagle, in an effort to predict the weather and save the life of sailors who had to tackle the rough seas. Such a glass is now often referred to as Fitzroy's Storm Glass.

Chemistry at school was not one of my strong subjects, I got by with a dual award B in my exams and that was the last time I even looked at compositions and anything related to such a subject. However, a Storm Glass is described as being a cylinder which is filled with a mixture of water, ethanol, potassium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and camphor (no sign of the magnesium ribbon I used to set on fire for fun in the lab). Fitzroy believed that the formation and dissolution of crystals and particles in the mixture reflected temperature and pressure and therefore, in its own way predicted the weather.

This Storm Glass comes sat on a base of beech wood, with a hole perfectly shaped for the cylindrical piece of glass to sit in, easy to put together, we have ours on the book shelf and without thinking about it, we both check it numerous times a day and make comment.

So how does it predict the weather?

Inside the Storm Glass are some crystals which more around into formations to help you work out what the weather will be like and it is scarily accurate:
  • If the liquid remains clear - the weather will be fair
  • If the liquid becomes Murky - rain is coming
  • If the crystals have formed at the top of the glass - Thunderstorms are coming
  • If the crystals are large and flaky - It will be a cloudy day
  • If the crystals are joined together in a thread - It will be windy
I find it absolutely fascinating to watch as the crystals within the sealed glass chamber cluster or disperse with changes in air pressure or temperature and it has come some way to help understand my headaches, though of course there is no cure, other than a dark room and an eye mask.

I think this is a really lovely, if some what quirky as a gift and this Storm Glass can be found for around £19.99 on Amazon* and they do come in all shapes and sizes too.

Marks & Spencer Apothecary Luxury Gift Set

The Marks & Spencer Apothecary Range is one I rave about a lot, I adore it and it is amazing value for money. I featured the Restore range here on my blog some time ago and since then I have gone on to try a few more pieces from the brand, which will appear on my blog soon. Today, I am sharing the Apothecary Gift Set which I have just bought because it is amazing value for money.
Marks & Spencer Apothecary Luxury Gift Set
The set features products scented from the Restore, Balance and Calm ranges, and all of the products included within the box are designed to help you unwind and hit the reset button.

Contents

  • 3 x Candle (1 x Calm, 1 x Balance, 1 x Restore)
  • 3 x Reed Diffuser (1 x Calm, 1 x Balance, 1 x Restore)
  • 3 x Aroma Oils (1 x Calm, 1 x Balance, 1 x Restore)
  • 3 x Linen Spray (1 x Calm, 1 x Balance, 1 x Restore)
  • 1 x Pulse Point Oil (Calm)
  • 1 x Bath Salts (Calm)
  • 1 x Hand Wash (Calm)
  • 1 x Hand Lotion (Calm)
  • 1 x Headband
  • 1 x Eye Mask
What I love about this, aside from the inclusion of three candles and the three reed diffusers, is the inclusion of the aroma oils, something I use a lot of, especially whilst working from home. Aroma Oils within my diffuser are used to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere in an evening with oils which include lavender oils or jasmine, but I also oils which contain Peppermint and Spearmint to help clear my sinus'.

If you know of someone who is in need of some time out and relaxation, then this box does contain everything from bath salts and room sprays to a headband and an eye mask. The box is priced at just £49.50 here* and it is an absolute bargain.

Giorgio Armani - My Way Eau de parfum

The newest release from Giorgio Armani is My Way, a Floral Fragrance for women which I have been wearing for some time now and it is one of those fragrances which captures your attention quite quickly.
Giorgio Armani - My Way Eau de parfum
This is my first fragrance from the Armani range for quite a few years and they never do fail to impressed. The description of My Way draws you in and captures your attention.
My Way is said to have been inspired by the genuine search for meaning and authenticity that lies outside oneself, ultimately creating a more profound way of being. Through the influence of serendipitous encounters and new experiences, one discovers one’s own multifaceted depths. Intimate yet universal, “I am what I live” encapsulates this ethos.
From the bottle to the cap and even the box, everything with this fragrance is recyclable and refillable - this really impressed me! The bottle comes with the most stunning blue stone cap which is wrapped around by a golden ring, this is supposed to be a talisman which is said to bring good fortune and luck.
Giorgio Armani - My Way Eau de parfum
The fragrance which sits within the floral family has top notes of Bergamot and Orange Blossom, so as you can expect, it does have that strong citrus scent and once which is immediately uplifting, the heart notes of Tuberose and Jasmine bring to life the floral side of the fragrance and as they intertwine with the citrus notes, they settle to work incredibly well together, toning down the sharpness of the citrus for that much softer side.  The base notes of Cedarwood, Vanilla and White Musks bring about a softer side to the rest of the notes and allows the floral heart notes through to settle on the skin.

I hadn't expected to like this fragrance because of the inclusion of vanilla, but instead I absolutely love it. The vanilla scent as a note isn't strong enough to dominate and overshadow everything else because of the cedarwood which creates an almost sweet base.  For me, the star of the show is the opening notes of Bergamot and Orange Blossom, that initial blast of citrus capturing your attention.  On the skin it impresses with its longevity and lasts for 5-6 hours before you could re-apply if you have somewhere to go of an evening, but even without re-application you can still just about get a sense of the fragrance later into the evening.

This fragrance is on sale with The Perfume shop in three sizes 30ml is £55, 50ml is £76 and then finally we have 90ml for £103.
