L'Occitane Rose Jasmin Eau de Toilette

One of my favourite fragrance notes is Jasmine, except in Thierry Mugler Angel (vile), it was in the notes of my wedding fragrance which Bvlagri has sadly discontinued. L’Occitane have released a new Eau de Toilette called Rose Jasmin and I’ve been wearing it for the past few weeks now and I absolutely love it. Rose is one of those scents that I find people either love or hate, for me if it is a fresh scent and by that I mean not manufactured to smell like Rose, then I love it. 

Described as being a delicate, fresh and floral fragrance that is elegant and feminine, Rose Jasmin Eau de Toilette is a celebration of the modern woman; feminine and floral with an individual twist. It comes packaged in the most beautiful of muted pink bottles which is quite unlike other L’Occitane fragrances that I have used and I love the style.

This delicately crafted floral bouquet combines the noble rose centifolia, evocative of modern femininity and sweet jasmine wrapped in a veil of white musk and woody notes for a feminine and floral fragrance.

So quite the description of the fragrance from L’Occitane and the perfume notes give the impression that it could be anything but floral, but it most definitely sits in the floral family category. Opening with top notes of lemon and peppercorn you get that freshness without the tart citrus note because for me, the heart notes appear very quickly with the Rose Centifolia which is sweet and subtle, Jasmine Absolute which is really uplifting and calming and then Magnolia which pairs really well with Jasmine and is a sweeter floral note. The base notes of Cedarwood, Musk, Oak Moss, Lorenox come together to add that woody effect to work with those florals.

This isn’t an overwhelming fragrance at all, it is delicate and floral and one which lingers all day on the skin or on your chosen clothing. It is just absolutely delightful as a fragrance, definitely one for spring and summer.

If you love Rose and Jasmin as fragrances notes, aside from the perfume there is also a shower gel and body lotion, making the perfect trip for laying the scent to really make it stand out. The fragrance is priced at £52 for 50ml, which is a great price point and is up there with one of my favourite L’Occitane Eau de Toilettes.

Arran Sense of Scotland Lochranza Mens Eau de Toilette

Arran Sense of Scotland  is a brand I have really liked getting to know and around my home I have quite a few of their Reed diffusers, in the scent After the Rain dotted about because it is such a delightful scent. New to the growing collection this time is a fragrance that isn’t for me, but instead for him indoors and timed perfectly with Valentines Day on the horizon, Arran Sense of Scotland Lochranza Mens Eau de Toilette has been tried and tested.

Described as being a perfectly balanced fragrance, designed for men, the Lochranza Eau De Toilette is a delicate combination of patchouli and anise, the two together create a spicy base note, peppered with aromas of warmer, more floral tones. I had expected this to be quite an earthy scent, one which, like After the Rain, has a fresh yet floral musk tone.

The fragrance which comes presented in a glass bottle, square and chunky with a wooden lid is said to have been inspired by the beautiful windswept north of the isle. Surrounded by brooding hills facing the imposing grey ruin of its castle, placed dramatically on a shingle spit in the open sea loch. Quite a vivid description and one which sends me to the scene of a Harry Potter film as Harry is been flown by Buckbeak in and around Hogwarts! 

When spritzed, this fragrance to me is warm, clean, rich, fresh and quite aromatic all in one go. There is definitely a note of mint as the scent begins to dry down, but the star of the show is clearly both the Patchouli which is sweet, musky and spicy all rolled into one and then with Anise which is rich and has those liquorice hints it is often compared too. Added to it you have Vetiver, Grapefruit and lemon, you have a scent that opens with fresh earthiness and dries down keeping all those notes together from that citrus top to the woody almost spicy base.

Priced around £42 for 100ml it is a mid priced fragrance which has a fairly good longevity on the skin.

HERBAE par L’OCCITANE Clary Sage

Over the years, L’Occitane have created some incredible Fragrances and not just those that run through their skincare and body care ranges. When it comes to a selection of Eau de Toilette offerings, I have absolutely loved the likes of Violette & Rose De Mai. Today is the turn of Herbae par L’Occitane Clary Sage Eau de Toilette and Beauty Milk.

Starting with the Clary Sage EDT which is packaged in the most stunning bottle, Clary Sage was everything I didn’t expect from a fragrance of that name. 

I was expecting it to be very green and earthy and not something I would want to wear a lot of - well I was very wrong.

Cast your mind to the scent of Provence on a clear spring day; aromatic, invigorating and lightly floral thanks to wild flowers that blossom in abundance across the rolling hills of the South of France. HERBAE par L’OCCITANE 

It is said that Clary Sage, which is the embodiment of this scent does bring those refreshing notes of wild grass and they are expertly intertwined with a herbaceous heart of clary sage, so the Earth green scent I was expecting is most definitely evident and present, but the rest of the notes give it a little twist.

As always with fragrance by L’Occitane there is the most wonderful selection of notes and for Clary Sage we have a few.

Fragrance Notes

• Top notes: Bitter Orange, Bergamot, Thyme
• Heart notes: Clary Sage, Angelica, Wild Grass
• Base notes: Elemi, Cashmeran, Amber

So opening with the fresh and very zesty notes of Bitter orange and Bergamot, the Thyme in the background to ensure the citrus doesn’t become too powerful, already you have that scent of spring in a bottle. The heart notes add that more earth and again citrusy with Angelica alongside Clary Sage and Wild Grass but the base notes, as the fragrance settles are really beautiful. Elemi, which was once described to be as being clean, green and citrusy but then with Cashmeran which is warm, woody, pine like and also some say with leather works so well alongside Amber, which is warm and sweet with a vanilla type scent.

Then to accompany the EDT we have the Herbae par L’Occitane Clary Sage Beauty Milk which is described as being an aromatic, green and invigorating body lotion that is sensual and mysterious.

The Beauty Milk, which given its name has a fluid texture, is enriched to Shea Butter to ensure your skin is hydrated and moisturised. Alongside the Shea Butter is a natural extract of Clary Sage which gives it those earthy green notes you get with the fragrance and when combined, the two enhance that wonderful clean, green and warm scent.

For me, as other descriptions read, Herbae par L’Occitane Clary Sage is one of those scents that are made for Spring and Summer as each season transitions into one another, too light and airy for Winter, which for me needs a fragrance which is rich, dark and mysterious.

On sale now the EDT is priced at £55 for 50ml and the Beauty Milk is £24.50 for 250ml. For me, Clary Sage is surprisingly delightful and I’m glad I tried it before reading anything about it, it’s one of those fragrances that would suit absolutely everyone and, as with most fragrances from L’Occitane, it was great longevity on the skin, for me lasting around 5-6 hours before I would feel the need to re-apply.

Good Girl Carolina Herrera

When a fragrance has the wow factor, it has the wow factor and Caroline Herrera has definitely got that covered with Good Girl.  The outer packaging giving no clues away as what it is you will find inside, I was stunned to see just how the fragrance is packaged.

If ever there has been a way to give a fragrance the wow factor, whether or not stiletto heels are for you, then this has absolutely it, just stunning and the attention to detail is insane. As it happens, there is a reason for the Stiletto Heel design and it said that heels are the ultimate symbol of power, igniting passions with their extreme sensuality and that description works with that of the fragrance:

Be the most confident, powerful version of you with Carolina Herrera Good Girl Eau de Parfum; a sensual, charismatic fragrance that blends light and dark elements to capture the complexity of the modern woman.

When it comes to choosing a fragrance, for me it really is quite a person choice as to what works for you.  For me, I choose a fragrance to suit my mood, I am no more a fan of floral than I am fruit or oriental scents when it comes to an offering from a brand. In the same way, I also have a list of fragrances I cannot stand, despite their popularity and anyone who knows or has met me, will be able to name at least one of those.

Good Girl as a fragrance, which does sit in the Oriental family, is one that has captured my attention and I wasn't sure what I was going to make of it, though the notes are quite something and there is a lot going on with them.

• Top Notes: Almond
• Heart Notes: Tuberose & Jasmine Sambac
• Bottom Notes: Tonka Bean & Cocoa

With the opening spritz, which for fun is done with the heel of the Stiletto shaped bottle, there is a surprising burst of something fruity, which I had not expected at all, but alongside the fruity note you also get a contrast of those earthy greens and I loved it.  As the fragrance begins to dry down the heart notes really come through, not as delicate as you might think as Jasmine storms in to make a claim on this scent and for me, fragrances with Jasmine as a heart note are ones I tend to head towards, but the Tuberose adds some sweetness before the base notes bring about a wonderful richness which does have a slight bitterness until Tonka Bean comes into its own to add a very slight vanilla hint which I am delighted to say is not too over the top.

I have worn Good Girl a lot since it arrived just before Christmas and it has a really impressive longevity on the skin, it is one of those fragrances which I can spritz in a morning and still catch a sniff in the evening.  If you are a fan of scents such as YSL Black Opium then Good Girl is one to try.

Available in 30ml, 50ml and 80ml it is priced between £52 and £88 with The Perfume Shop currently.

L'Occitane Citrus Verbena Eau de Toilette

A fragrance that has seen me through these last few weeks of Summer is from L'Occitane with their Citrus Verbena Eau de Toilette, a scent I really hadn't expected to enjoy as much as Terre de Lumiere or the Rose Calisson Eau de Toilette, but I did.

From the brightest of yellow packaging and bottle, this is a fragrance that anyone could wear and we both do. 

Every facet of freshness is captured in this blend of citrus fruits and crushed, lemony leaves, which offers both a comforting, gentle sensation and an invigorating breath of vitality.

With top notes of grapefruit, orange and lemon from that very first spritz they come together to create a wonderful bright and zesty accord that really brightens your mood.

I’ve read that people have described it as being being like washing up liquid and in all honesty that couldn’t be further from the truth because as soon as this scent dries down, the heart notes of Verbena comes into play and it’s that scent of fresh lemons which come to life, without being too sharp or sour and it’s just so comforting as the base notes of Cedarwood, which works really well with both floral and fruity notes, brings a woody scent to life and it’s that perfect uplifting fragrance which lasts for 4-5 hours on the skin before the need to re-apply, though it lasts much longer on your clothing.

With its bright yellow bottle to match its delightful scent, it costs around £52 for 100ml which is great value for money and the kind of fragrance you can gift to absolutely everyone.

I have tried all of the fragrances within this edit and would struggle to choose a favourite of those five offerings, though today I am wearing Lazy Sunday Morning by Maison Margiela which is just divine!

The Ideal Perfume Experience By Pairfum London

I adore my perfumes, scents, fragrances and sprays, whatever your preferred term for them might be. I love discovering new brands, new smells and ultimately I love choosing a fragrance which works for me.

When I am wanting to buy a new fragrance, I don’t want to experience it in a busy shopping centre or department store, I want to try it in surroundings that I frequent regularly. It is very very rare that I would purchase a fragrance from a swatch test at any counter, I’ve been on the wrong end of a bad choice too many times. This is where Pairfum London with their Perfume experience comes in its own.

Pairfum London is a company who specialise in a private collection of fragrances. They offer a selection of fragrance for both the home and as fragrances for you. It is worth noting that all the fragrances are handmade in the UK by artisans and each is designed to be luxury with a conscious as well as being both natural and eco-friendly.

Beautifully presented in a black gift box with exquisite gold lettering, the Pairfum London Experience already gives you that impression of luxury and it is really well made and put together. Opening the lid, inside you are greeted with 12 individual perfume vials, which are full to the top with 2ml of each fragrance. Added to the fragrances is 50 perfume cards, often referred too as blotter for you to trial the fragrances. I tend to use a mixture of the cards and my own skin to try and get a sense of what fragrance I really like.

The fragrances inside this box are all really different, I’d go as far as saying no two are even remotely similar, despite being within the same fragrance family. 

The first fragrance Scarlet, Rhubarb and Oakmoss. Part of the floral Chypre family, it is every bit as bold as I was hoping for. With a first spritz, this fragrance opens with a notable blend of fresh Tart Rhubarb, Sun-Dried Fruits and Ripe Strawberries which make up those top notes and it is really beautiful. The heart notes of crisp Apple & Apricot dampen down the tartiness of those top notes whilst not dominating too much because the White Gardenia just gets noticed as it dries down. The base notes of Oakmoss and Sensuous Musk are there to give the fragrance a wonderfully rich and lingering dry down, all whilst giving each one of those notes a chance to catch you attention.

The second fragrance is Pink Rose and Sensuous Musk and it sits within the floral family. This fragrance has top notes of Sparkling Lemon and Lime are with them we also have Peach, together they are fresh, warm and fruity but they don’t really get too long to shine before the heart notes of Pink Rose, Magnolia and Frangipani catch your attention and ultimately dominate the entire fragrance. The base notes of Sensuous Musk, Amber and Precious Woods whilst present, don’t for me break down the heart notes enough, oddly the longer the scent was on my skin, the more I liked it.

The third fragrance Sea Salt, Sage & Amber which sits within the Aromatic family of fragrances. With this scent we have the top notes of Sage, Bergamot, Tangerine and Grapefruit and I loved it from the very first spritz. It’s light and fresh with those citrus scents notable but lurking at the back is that sage and it’s delightful. The heart notes of Kelp, Sea Salt & Minerals are light and fresh, almost like being down at the beach on a sunny day as all those fresh scents intermingle. The base notes for this scent includes Amber, Musl and Cedarwood which are soft enough to not overpower.

Next we have Ginger, Elemi & Vertiver and this one also sits within the Aromatic Family. It opens with notes of Bergamot, Grapefruit and hint of Lavender, combined with Ginger, Elemi, Nutmeg & Cinnamon, for me there is a lot going on with these opening notes because you have the citrus side mixed with lavender which I didn’t find detectable but with those peppery sharp spicy notes, it was almost too much and I had to leave it to dry down and then come back. Whilst I didn’t enjoy the top notes, the heart notes of Geranium, Rose, Freesia, Gardenia, Jasmin and Orange Blossom, alongside the fruity hints of Coconut and Rasberry and these notes really dampen down those top notes as the base notes get their chance to shine and with them you have Vetiver, Guaiacwood, Cedar, Amber, Cashmere Musks, Vanilla & Moss which I really really liked. 

Next fragrance is Mandarin Blossom and Sandalwood and it from the Chypre family and is described as being a feminine floral Chypre. It opens with top notes of Mandarin Blossom, Apricot and White Hyacinth and it is really fresh and floral but for me it is the heart notes which steal the show as you get Sweet Pea, Jasmin and Ylang Ylang with the Jasmin really being the dominant scent behind a note of Sweet Pea. The base notes of Sandalwood, Patchouli, Amber and Musk creamy and rich without being too domineering, though I do wonder what this fragrance would be like without the Musk.

The fragrance I was really intrigued by was Spiced Coffee & Oaked Vanilla. I’m not a fan of Vanilla as a dominant scent note, it’s too powerful for me and makes my head ache. From the Oriental Spice family the fragrance has top notes of Pink Pepper, Orange Blossom and Crisp Pear which I really didn’t get a sense of at all, infact to me it smelt so similar to Thierry Mugler Alien, I really didn’t like it all. The heart notes which feature a blend of rich & dark Coffee with the elegance of Jasmin, I also didn’t detect. For me it was the base notes that stole the show and they are Vanilla aged in Oak, Patchouli and Cedar. Definitely not one for me.

The 7th fragrance in this collection is the Black Cherry & Oolong Tea and it belongs to the floral family. It opens with the top notes of Black Cherry, Bergamot, Red Berries and Nutty Almond and it’s quite rich and sweet all rolled together, as it settles down, the heart notes of Oolong Tea, Bulgarian & Turkish Roses and Liquorice come into play but the Black Cherry is still dominating as the base notes of Aniseed, Tonka, Iris and Patchouli are released. Of all the scent notes within this fragrance the Black Cherry and Tonka dominate and it was one of the longest lasting fragrances that I tried.

Next we have Bergamot, Basil & Patchouli and it sits within the Aromatic family. It opens with Bergamot, Lime, Green Leaves and spicy Basil which gives it that fresh woody lean but the basil and lime together it a pairing I absolutely loved. The heart notes are made up of Lily, Freesia, Violet Leaf, Rose and Geranium which come together to wrestle the scent and break it down slightly to allow the base notes of Patchouli, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cedar and Amber which all give the woody notes their chance to shine and it’s hard not to like it. 

The next fragrance is Grapefruit, Pepper and Black Cedar and it sits with the woody family. It opens with top notes of Grapefruit & Bergamot which together are quite zesty and fresh and work well at any time of the year. The heart notes use Leather which is described as being enhanced by the rich spicy elements of Black Pepper and Nutmeg before the base notes of Black Cedar, Patchouli, Tonka Bean and Moss make themselves known. This is definitely the most masculine fragrance within the collection and it’s absolutely stunning, it’s bold and strong, it doesn’t dry down too quickly and it lasts for hours when applied.

The next fragrance is the one I was expecting to be my favourite - Neroli, Musk and Orange Blossom which already sounds like Summer! Sitting within the floral family, it is definitely very feminine and it opens with note of Neroli which I happen to adore as a fragrance note as it’s a light as it is bold depending on what it paired with. In this case, the heart notes are Orange Blossom and Madagascan Jasmine which I also happen to just adore, most of my favourite fragrances feature Jasmine as a note in one of its forms and I could detect and loved it, the Orange Blossom is also there in the background. The base notes of Musk and Cedarwood, add depth and warmth to this fragrance and as expected it was definitely my favourite within the box.

The penultimate fragrance of this box is Cardamon, Tonka and White Oud which sits in the Oriental family. It opens with the top notes of Lime & Mandarin, Cardamom, Nutmeg, Clove and fruity hints of Cassis and for me whilst there is a hint of both Lime & Mandarin it is the heart notes of White Lily, Rose and Orange Blossom which are the most notable until the base of Tonka, White Oud, Cedar, Santal and Amber have their turn and then the White Oud mixed with Tonka dominate. This is definitely more of a masculine scent than a feminine one, but apparently unisex, it smelt better on my husband than on me.

Finally within this box we have Spiced Rum, Lime and Guaiac Wood. This fragrance sits within the Woody family and it opens with the top notes of Rum, Lime & Lemon as well as a combination of Nutmeg & Pepper. The heart notes are made up of Tuberose, Iris and Vintage Leather and the base notes of Guaiac Wood, Cedarwood, Golden Amber, Vanilla Pod and Musk. It’s hard to describe this a fragrance because the Rum is dominant from the first spritz right through to drying down and it is mixed with the lime but also the leather and Guaiac Wood, which makes a fragrance you would immediately describe, as a friend of mine did, expensive and luxurious. As you can imagine, with 12 very different fragrances which are described as being feminine, masculine or unisex, there is a lot of choice. They definitely are not anything like your high street brands or any brand you might even have on your bedside table. They make a statement from the moment the box arrives to the trialling begins and for me, there was just the one fragrance I really didn’t like, but from 12 I think it is quite impressive.

The Pairfum London Experience is priced at just £30 and once you have tried and discovered all of these fragrances and decide you would like to buy the full-sized bottle, then the £30 price of the Fragrance Library from the cost of the full-sized bottle, which I think is a really nice gesture and the only difficulty you might have is choosing your favourite! Each bottle is priced at £120.

John Lewis Scent Series Discovery Box Fragrance Gift Set

As you can see, there is some incredibly lovely brands and their fragrances and I am already obsessed with Juliette Has a Gun as a brand and Lipstick Fever is an absolutely delightful and it is an example of a fragrance I really didn't like when I spritzed it in Harrods, but took a sample home and changed my mind completely, I have just finished my first bottle of it!
